Fleet Safety Technology Works Best When Drivers Trust It

New research from Teletrac Navman suggests that effective onboarding, clear communication about driver data, and meaningful positive feedback can significantly influence how commercial drivers respond to safety and coaching technology.

For trucking fleets investing in dash cameras, telematics, AI-powered monitoring, in-cab alerts, and driver coaching platforms, choosing the right technology is only part of the equation. The way that technology is introduced, explained, and managed can have just as much impact on its long-term success.

A new survey conducted by fleet management technology provider Teletrac Navman found that 68% of drivers received some form of onboarding when safety technology was introduced. Among drivers who felt properly prepared to use their coaching solution, approximately three-quarters described the technology as highly effective.

The findings, published in Teletrac Navman's Mobilizing the Future of Fleets Report: Driver Coaching Edition, highlight trust, transparency, and communication as essential factors in encouraging drivers to accept safety technology rather than view it as another form of workplace surveillance.

According to Alain Samaha, CEO of Teletrac Navman, technology by itself is not enough to create better safety results. Fleets must also prepare drivers for the changes and ensure that monitoring systems support both business objectives and driver needs.

With competition for qualified drivers remaining intense and fleets facing continued pressure from insurance costs, litigation risks, accident claims, and regulatory requirements, successfully introducing safety technology has become increasingly important.

The Importance of Effective Safety Technology Onboarding

The research shows a significant difference between fleets that properly prepare drivers and those that simply install new technology without sufficient explanation.

Drivers who received effective onboarding were nearly three times more likely to consider coaching and feedback highly effective. According to the survey, 74% of properly onboarded drivers viewed the technology positively, compared with only 19% of drivers who felt their initial preparation was inadequate.

Despite these results, communication gaps remain common. Approximately one in five drivers said safety technology was added to their vehicles with little or no meaningful communication from fleet management.

A successful rollout requires more than a quick announcement. Drivers need to understand what is changing, why the technology is being introduced, where and when it will be used, and how it could affect their daily work.

When equipment is installed without explanation, drivers may immediately question its purpose. That initial uncertainty can create resistance and mistrust that may take months to overcome.

The Teletrac Navman report is based on a survey of 600 commercial drivers across the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Poor Technology Rollouts Can Create Mistrust and Confusion

Installing safety technology does not automatically mean drivers will trust it.

Even after a system is fully deployed, uncertainty can continue if drivers do not clearly understand how the technology works, what information it collects, and how that information will be used.

One of the biggest concerns identified in the survey was monitoring and surveillance, cited by 45% of drivers. Cameras and other monitoring systems may be intended to improve safety, investigate incidents, or protect drivers from false claims, but without a clear explanation, some drivers may see them primarily as tools for constant observation.

Confusion about system functionality can also reduce acceptance. Nearly one-quarter of surveyed drivers said they did not fully understand how the technology was supposed to work.

For drivers already managing traffic, fatigue, delivery schedules, weather conditions, and other operational pressures, unexplained warnings and alerts can feel more distracting than helpful.

More than two-thirds of respondents reported experiencing immediate challenges following a technology rollout that was connected to poor or ineffective onboarding.

These findings suggest that a fleet's implementation strategy can be just as important as the technology itself. Clear training and communication can help prevent confusion before it develops into long-term resistance.

Drivers Want to Understand How Their Data Is Used

Privacy and surveillance concerns continue to play a major role in how drivers perceive fleet safety technology.

The survey found that 45% of drivers identified unclear policies regarding data use and monitoring as a significant concern. At the same time, 30% said they would be more likely to remain with their employer if there were clear proof that the technology was being used to protect and support them rather than simply watch their behavior.

Giving drivers greater visibility into their own information could help build that trust. Nearly half of respondents, 47%, said easy access to their personal performance data would increase their confidence in the technology.

Another 43% emphasized the importance of fair and consistent data use across the entire workforce.

Drivers also expressed a preference for convenient access to their information, with 60% favoring a driver app as the preferred way to review performance data.

For fleets, this means simply saying that a camera, telematics platform, or coaching system is designed to improve safety may not be sufficient. Drivers want transparency. They want to know what is being collected, who can access it, how long it is retained, and how decisions based on that information could affect their careers.

When those answers are clear, safety technology is more likely to be viewed as a tool for improvement rather than punishment.

Positive Driver Feedback Matters

The research also reveals an important difference between collecting driver performance data and using that information to recognize good performance.

While 99% of surveyed drivers said they receive some type of feedback, only 51% reported receiving positive recognition. Meanwhile, 32% said they had experienced disciplinary action based on performance issues.

This imbalance could affect both morale and retention.

Recognition was identified by 37% of respondents as a factor that could influence their decision to stay with an employer. In an industry where retaining experienced drivers remains a major priority, regular acknowledgment of safe and professional performance may offer value beyond traditional compensation strategies.

Drivers also appear to place considerable value on useful, ongoing performance feedback.

More than half, 52%, said proactive tools such as driver scorecards and performance breakdowns improved both their driving quality and sense of pride in their work.

By comparison, only 21% said financial bonuses had the same effect.

The research further found a difference in reported near misses among drivers who receive real-time coaching. Fifty-six percent of drivers with immediate in-cab coaching said they rarely experienced a near miss, compared with 47% of drivers who did not receive real-time alerts.

This suggests that immediate feedback can help drivers identify and correct potentially risky behavior while there is still an opportunity to respond, rather than relying entirely on coaching that happens after an incident.

The survey also found that 60% of drivers believed feedback was fair and consistent when video and data were included in the coaching process. The use of supporting evidence also increased the percentage of drivers who viewed coaching as very effective, rising from 39% to 55%.

For fleets, the message is clear: objective data combined with constructive communication can make driver coaching feel more credible, fair, and useful.

Safety Events Can Affect Driver Confidence

The impact of a safety event can extend far beyond vehicle damage, downtime, insurance claims, and repair costs.

According to the survey, 38% of drivers experienced increased stress or anxiety following a negative driving event, while 17% reported a decline in confidence.

Drivers also expressed concerns about the possible professional consequences of an incident. One-quarter worried that a serious event could threaten their commercial driver's license, while 20% feared formal disciplinary action and 17% were concerned about potential financial penalties.

For fleet managers and safety teams, these findings demonstrate why the response after an incident matters.

A timely and constructive conversation can help a driver understand what happened, why it happened, and how similar situations can be avoided in the future. A coaching-focused approach can turn an event into a learning opportunity and help rebuild confidence.

On the other hand, a process viewed primarily as punitive may increase stress and weaken the driver's trust in the fleet's entire safety program.

The broader lesson from the research is that deploying safety technology is only the beginning.

To achieve better results, fleets need to clearly communicate why technology is being used, provide drivers with visibility into their own data, apply policies fairly and consistently, and balance corrective coaching with genuine recognition of safe driving.

Ultimately, the most successful fleet safety programs may not be defined solely by the sophistication of their cameras, telematics systems, or AI tools. Their success may depend just as much on something more fundamental: whether drivers trust the people and the process behind the technology.
